How To Elope In Big Sur

Big Sur is without a doubt one of the best places to elope in California. Instead of feeling like you’re on the coast of California, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Hawaii. One of the best parts about Big Sur is how remote this stretch of coast is, making intimacy easy to find! Elope with views of dramatic cliffs, bright blue water, storybook vibrant wildflowers, and even ethereal Redwood forests.

This post includes everything you need to know about eloping in Big Sur. I’ve included my pick of the best locations, along with practicalities, such as permit information, licenses, and the best time of year to plan your special day. Read on to make sure your day has plenty of Big Sur, with no big surprises.

How To Get To Big Sur

By Plane:

The best way to get to Big Sur is to fly to either San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or San Jose International Airport (SJC). Both airports are located about 2-2.5 hours away. You can also fly into the Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), as it is the closest airport. However, it is much smaller and only a handful of flights fly in every day, meaning the rates will likely be higher.

By Car:

No matter which airport you choose to fly into, the best way to get around Big Sur is by renting a car. Not only that, but the 90-mile stretch of coastline is considered California’s most scenic drive, so renting a car wins points for both practicality and beauty.

Pro Tip: Download offline Google Maps directions on your phone so that even when you lose service as you get closer to the coast, you can still receive navigation.

The Best Time Of Year To Get Married In Big Sur

Spring

TLC once sang “Don’t go chasing waterfalls.” Wise advice. BUT, if you do go chasing waterfalls, Big Sur during spring is the right place to do that. Not only do the waterfalls reach their peak, the wildflowers are starting to bloom! Spring is also a great time for whale watching, as whales return from their winter hibernation. Do keep in mind, however, that heavy rainfall in winter may mean certain roads may still be closed.

Summer

This is Big Sur’s high season. Whether you find all the people overwhelming, or enjoy the festive vibe, is down to personal preference. You will still be able to find secluded spots, and there will be more to see and do, from barbecues to live music. The mornings are also very foggy during the summertime, which typically doesn’t lift until midday — something to remember when it comes to photo ops!

Fall

September and October are two of the best months for pleasant weather in Northern California, regularly reaching the 50s and 60s, minus the fog, and minus the crowds and peak summer prices! Plus, the fall colors start to pop out from the landscape, and wildlife is in full flow, with whales, orcas, and butterflies all enjoying the time of year.

Winter

Winter is the beginning of Big Sur’s rainy season. It’s not uncommon for trails or roads to be completely washed out during this time. Unlike other locations, snow is highly unlikely. But if you do decide to elope during winter, it’s vital to have a backup plan, as closures to areas are not uncommon due to the washouts. Naturally, the crowds are at their lowest, as are the prices, making this an ideal time for a budget option.

Best Places To Elope In Big Sur

coastal trail with wildflowers in Big Sur, CA

The trails in Garrapata State Park are my absolute favorite place for elopements in Big Sur. You get the quintessential coastal cliffside views, vibrant wildflowers, and you can even venture down to some hidden beaches. Plus this area is less trafficked than other areas—a total hidden gem! Zigzag through coastal hikes, catch a view of seals, sea lions, or otters, or climb 50-foot to view the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federal marine sanctuary area.

photo of arch at Pfeiffer Beach

From a hidden gem to a popular spot, this beach draws in the crowds to view its keyhole arch. It’s easy to see the appeal, the purple (yes, purple) sand and rock formations are absolutely stunning, and remind me of Hawaii! There truly isn’t a bad sight on this beach, and should definitely be considered for your elopement. Beware, though, due to the fog, locals have nicknamed “June Gloom,” so don’t expect to get the clear views that make for the perfect snaps.

ocean shoreline at China Lookout in Big Sur, CA

China Lookout

This spectacular overlook also has several trails that branch off of it, allowing you to get away and space out from other visitors. Not only that, but this area offers breathtaking cliffside views of the coastline, and a mesmerizing overview of the turquoise waters below and all the marine life that call it home.

redwood trees in Big Sur, CA

Did you know that you can see the famous coastal California redwoods in Big Sur?! Yes, you can combine the ethereal redwood forest and dramatic oceanside cliffs on your elopement day.  There are multiple locations around the area that are low-key and get you phenomenal views of these giants. Growing over 360 feet in height, this backdrop is a nice way to celebrate putting down roots for your future with your partner.

rocky shoreline in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Point Lobos is in the northern part of Big Sur, referred to as “the crown jewel of the California State Park System,” which considering just how beautiful these locations are, speaks volumes. The park offers numerous cliffside hiking trails, as well as beaches you can venture onto, and water you can go scuba diving in, if that’s your thing. With historical routes to indigenous tribes, this sacred space would add a special aura to your wedding day.

view of coastline in Andrew Molera State Park

Another site with a panoramic view of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Andrew Molera is one of the more laid-back areas of Big Sur without as much foot traffic.  It’s most famous for its trails lining the coastal cliffs and Molera Point—a lookout that overlooks the entire coast and rolling hills. It’s underdeveloped compared to other areas, giving it a rough and ready vibe that many couples love.

How To Get A Big Sur Elopement Permit

A “special use permit” is required for almost all wedding ceremonies held within Big Sur. Failure to get the permit will result in a ranger stopping the ceremony and even banning you from the park (yes this really happens), so it is extremely important to get the permit for your elopement.

Big Sur is composed of multiple different state parks, each having their own set of rules.  The state parks in the area are Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Garrapata State Park, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, and Limekiln State Park.  When choosing a location, check which park that spot is in, then check on the specific permit required for that park. The Special Use Permits typically range between $300-$400 across these parks.

Pro Tip: All of my photography packages include permit assistance! If any of this information is confusing, reach out!

How To Get A California Marriage License

Understanding California's marriage laws is crucial when planning your elopement. Here are some key points to consider:

Marriage License

You must obtain a marriage license from a California county clerk's office. The license is valid immediately upon issuance and for 90 days.

Waiting Period

There is no waiting period once you obtain your marriage license, allowing you to elope on the same day if you choose. However, I always recommend arriving at your elopement location at least one full day in advance to get settled in and would advise picking up the marriage license beforehand for less stress and timeline purposes for your elopement day.

Officiant

Your ceremony must be conducted by a recognized officiant, such as a minister, priest, rabbi, or judge. Friends or family members can also become Deputy Commissioners of Civil Marriages for a Day through the county clerk's office. I am a recognized officiant in the state of California & offer to sign for my couples in addition to photographing their day if they so choose.

Witnesses

California requires at least one witness, in addition to the officiant, to sign the marriage license.

Just So You Know: I am an ordained officiant and can legally sign on your marriage certificate in most U.S. states. Certain states may require additional paperwork and/or processing fees but I’m happy to help! However, if you would like an actual celebrant to verbally walk you through a ceremony, I know some great people who can do that for you.

Where To Stay For Your Big Sur Elopement

While the city of Big Sur itself has very few lodging options, most people choose to stay either in Monterey or Carmel-By-The-Sea. These cities have lots of amenities like nice restaurants, groceries, and gas, plus, they are only 15-20 minutes from some of the more iconic locations along the coastline. If you’re looking for a more remote experience, the city of Big Sur does have a few lodging options I’ll list below.
